The e-commerce giant eBay is denying that it will start accepting digital assets despite the fact that it has sponsored the Consensus conference in New York. A few days ago, some rumors spread regarding the possibility of eBay to start accepting digital assets as a means of payment for the goods sold in the platform.
eBay Denies Rumours About Accepting Cryptocurrencies
eBay has recently denied the rumors regarding the possibility to start accepting digital asses as a payment method. This was confirmed by an eBay spokesperson during a conversation with Bloomberg on May 14.
The rumors started after eBay decided to purchase billboards at the Consensus conference that is taking place in New York. These ads read:
“Virtual Currency. It’s happening on eBay.”
Thus, the crypto community was very excited since the company could have embraced virtual currencies as a means of payment. The spokesperson explained that virtual currencies are currently not being accepted as a form of payment on the eBay platform and they are not part of their payments strategy.
The ads could be related to the Virtual Currency section that the company has on its online marketplace. In this section, users can purchase cryptocurrencies using traditional forms of payment such as credit or debit cards.
Indeed, in a recent conversation with Trustnodes, the ads make reference to a variety of crypto-related items that are currently for sale on the platform. This includes mining equipment. Nonetheless, it seems that the company wanted to just advertise itself at a crypto conference by making reference to cryptocurrencies.
Although eBay is not accepting digital assets, there are other firms that are currently working in order to be able to spread digital currencies and make them available for institutional investors from all over the world. Two of these companies are Fidelity Investments and the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE).
If eBay would accept digital assets that would be very bullish for the market since it could reach a larger number of users.
