Florence Welch threw herself all-in for women’s civil rights during Florence + the Machine‘s concert Friday night (May 24) in suburban Detroit.
Introducing her Patti Smith homage “Patricia,” Welch told the crowd at the DTE Energy Music Theatre, “You deserve so much more. From the core of my being, I am with you and I am horrified. The singer was referring to severe abortion-curbing legislation in Alabama and several other states in a bid to eventually overturn Roe v. Wade in the U.S. Supreme Court.
Welch also requested that rather than buy a souvenir T-shirt they should donate the money to the American Civil Liberties Union. It was her only political remark of the night, but coming between “Queen of Peace” and “Patricia” it was particularly resonant.
Florence + the Machine next performs May 26 in Toronto and will be on this side of the pond through mid-June. A European festival tour starts June 29 at Rock Werchter in Belgium.
