The former ska guitarist’s A&R career includes signing The Weeknd and Maggie Rogers.
Warner Bros. Records has hired Nate Albert, a co-founder of The Mighty Mighty Bosstones whose industry career includes signing The Weeknd and Maggie Rogers, among others, as the label’s new executive vice president of A&R. Reporting to WBR co-chairman and CEO Aaron Bay-Schuck, Albert will be based out of Warner Music Group’s new downtown Los Angeles headquarters.
Albert arrives at WBR after three years with Capitol Music Group, where he also held the title of evp, A&R. While there, he notably signed Rogers, whose debut album Heard It in a Past Life debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 earlier this year, and worked on projects by Cold War Kids, Troye Sivan and Calum Scott. At Republic, Albert signed The Weeknd and worked on the singer’s chart-topping collaboration with Ariana Grande, “Love Me Harder.” In his ten years at the UMG label, he also signed Phantogram and Anberlin, plus shepherded releases from artists including Florence + The Machine, The Lonely Island and more.
Before he ventured behind the scenes, however, Albert began his career in the business as a founding lead guitarist in Boston ska band The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, which scored a major hit in 1997 with “The Impression That I Get.”
“As we continue to expand our global A&R presence, Nate comes to us with a musician’s unique sensibility and a brilliant ear for authentic, compelling artists,” said Bay-Schuck. “He’s one of the most astute, intuitive, and inspired A&R people in the business, and the diversity and quality of the music that Nate has championed speaks for itself. He’s a fantastic addition to the team.”
Albert’s appointment follows last week’s promotion of Ben Larsen to senior vp of international marketing at the storied label.
Added Albert, “I’ve long admired Warner Bros.’ deep-seated support of artistic creativity and originality. There is extraordinary talent all across the globe looking for the right team to help them magnify their visions and build long-term careers. I’m looking forward to bringing them into the WBR family and making great records that will move culture.”
